Welfare Grants
The Alzheimers Society (Cardiff and the Vale Branch) welfare grants are for carers of people with any type of dementia in urgent need of one or more of the following:
- Equipment or home adaptations (one-off items)
- Necessary travel and crisis care (eg. for carers in urgent need of a break)
- Important expenses (eg. telephone installation, community alarms etc.)
These grants are intended to relieve stress in the caring situation or to enable families to continue to care at home.
Grants may be made up to a maximum of £200 and funds are limited. If a larger amount is needed, the Branch may be able to contribute part of the total. Repeat grants to the same family are not normally given but each application will be considered carefully.
Carers and case managers are expected to have already explored all other sources of financial help, as our welfare grant is intended to complement, not to replace, statutory grants.
Any carers or recently bereaved carers can be considered, whether they are a member of the Society or not, but carers are encouraged to join.
Where the Society has met a substantial part of the cost of an aid we would be grateful if they are offered back to the Society when they are no longer required. This enables us to reach out and help more families within the community.
A letter of endorsement must be supplied by the case manager ( eg. social worker, community psychiatric nurse etc. ) stating that:
- Extreme financial hardship exists.
- The funds requested cannot be found elsewhere.
- The person being cared has a type of dementia.
- There is an urgent need.
We aim to respond to requests for financial help within 5 working days. If a carer would like to discuss their application in more detail they should not hesitate to contact the Finance Officer, Carole Standfast, or Dawn John, Branch Manager, on Cardiff (029) 2052 1872 during the following times:
| Monday to Thursday - | 9am - 5pm | |
| Friday - | 9am - 4:30pm |
